How long is a session?

Individual sessions are approximately 50-55 minutes long.  This is the same for children or adults.

Why do you use play and experiential therapies?

Play and experiential therapies are an very effective addition to traditional talk therapy methods when working with adolescent and adult clients.  Experiential therapies can be used to address and examine relationship issues, transitions, family dynamics, career and life goals and obstacles, trauma, depression, anxiety, and many other difficulties my clients may face.

How long will I need to come to counseling?

The answer for this question is different for every person.  Our goal at Brave Tomorrow is always to work ourselves out of a job by helping you be more independent, skilled, and confident in living your life. We want to give you the tools you need to work toward the very best version of you.  For some clients, this takes only a few sessions - for others it may take years.  Every person, every situation, and every life path is different.  We will help you find what works best for you.

What are "experiential" therapies?

Picture
Imagine how it feels to be extremely anxious ...

Now try putting that into words.  Use the best words you can find to describe the intense feeling of anxiety.  Even for people with advanced ability to use words and language, this is a very difficult task.  Words just don't seem to be enough.

Now imagine how it would feel to "paint your anxiety"; or to use small objects to build a model of your anxiety in a box of sand (dragons, tornadoes, skeletons, princesses, lighthouses, etc).  For most clients, being able to physically and visually experience the issues we are addressing in the counseling office allows us progress toward goals in ways that are more accurate and often more effective than traditional talk therapy methods.

"Experiential" techniques involve "doing" to work toward counseling goals as an addition to the traditional techniques of talk therapy.  This may involve art, play, sandtray, or many other various hand-on techniques.
