Using the Power of Horses to Grow Healthy
Individuals, Families, Groups and Teams
|
Equine Assisted Counseling (EAC) or Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a hands-on, experiential approach to counseling that allows clients to learn more about themselves and others by participating in activities with horses. Clients have an opportunity to find deeper meaning and understanding of their own patterns, behaviors and themes by talking through the activities with the counselor and the equine (horse) professional. Clients can also try out new behaviors and attitudes with immediate feedback from the horses' behaviors.
|
Our EAC sessions use a mental health professional, equine professional, and a horse/horses. Clients work with horses from the ground – this is not a riding program, so clients will not be riding on the horses during EAC/EAL. EAC/EAL provides an environment which facilitates and encourages personal growth, self-discovery and problem-solving.
EAC/EAL can be used for treatment of mental health concerns (trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders), regulating emotions and behaviors, working through conflict in family or group settings, and for building a more cohesive, efficient team in your office or organization.

Why Horses?
Horses are very much like humans in that they are social animals. They have defined roles within their herd established through non-verbal communication. Horses have distinct personalities, attitudes, and moods. An approach that works with one horse does not necessarily work with another. Horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning. Using metaphors is an eye-opening way to look into our own patterns and behaviors with new perspective.
Horses require people to be engaged mentally and physically - a valuable characteristic for all aspects of life. Most importantly, horses have the ability to reflect exactly what human body language is telling them. They will show you when you are effectively communicating, when you are managing your emotions and behaviors, and when you are not. Horses are honest, which makes them especially powerful messengers and can show you what you project and how you are perceived in many interesting ways.
